BLS Questions

Q: How long is the BLS course?
A: The course is scheduled for four and a half hours, but depending on the number of students and the number of mannequins used, it may finish up sooner.

Q: What is the difference between Heartsaver CPR and Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider? (BLS)
A: Heartsaver CPR (and AED) is appropriate for LPN's, CNA's, teachers, coaches, personal trainers, golf
pros, and many non-medical areas.  If you are a Registered Nurse, or work in a more advanced healthcare setting that has advanced medical equipment, such as a hospital or doctor's office, chances are you'll need BLS.  If you're not sure, it's better to call us.

Q: My card has expired.  Can I take the BLS Recert course?
A: There is no grace period for BLS courses.  Your card is only valid until the last day of the month in which you took the course.  After that time, you need to take the initial course.

ACLS Questions:

Q: How do I prepare for the ACLS course?
A:
First, you should read your textbook.  The 10 core cases are the meat and potatoes of this course. Each case is clearly presented in an easy to read format.  It will explain the heart arrythmia or situation, discuss signs and symptoms, and discuss treatment modalities.  It is helpful if you refer to your ACLS algorithms during each case.  The algorithms are clear and precise and should help you get familiar with the "codes".   Secondly, download all of the documents on the ACLS page and access the AHA Student Website and complete the precourse assessment, being careful to note your score. You can retake this online precourse assessment as many times as you wish.  If there are areas you need improvement in, you should re-read those sections in the text and in the algorithms. Then, do the practice quizzes and read the pharmacology overview to get familiar with the drugs used in ACLS. Also, you should spend some time with the EKG simulator if you're rusty on your rhythms. Florida Heart offers training in EKG and Pharmacology.  It is a four hour preparatory class that can be arranged by appointment.  Call the office for details.
