The Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Providers and Heartsaver CPR/AED courses are the backbone of the American Heart Association's lifesaving training. Most entry level positions in healthcare will require one of these courses. It is best that you check with your employer or school faculty to ask which class is appropriate for you.
BLS for Healthcare Provider is most appropriate for nurses, EMT's or entry into EMT or Fire School, Paramedics, Physician's assistants, ARNP's, Doctors, dentists and most hospital based employees. This would also be the course you would likely need to work in a doctor's office or clinic. It includes working a "code" as a team member, using a bag valve mask and pocket mask, CPR and choking for all age groups and a written exam.
The Heartsaver/AED course is needed for those working in Assisted Living Facilities (ALF) and is appropriate for HHA and CNA certified providers. It is also the right course for coaches, personal trainers, teachers and church members. It is geared primarily towards resuscitation of adults, but optional components are CPR for infants and children. It does include how to use an AED and choking.
